I do not understand how my kitchen tongs work...?

I have these tongs (like the kind you use to pick up potatoes or something) and when you hold them pointing down and squeeze they open, but to close them you hold them pointing up and squeeze. They can't close when you point them down. How does this work? They look like normal tongs to me they don't have any kind of extra contraption that I can see.
