What happens to demo Apple computers when new releases come out?

I have a friend who has called a couple of Apple retailers to ask "what happens to the demo Apple computers?" but gets NO good answer.... (a run-around answer) .....it's like there is some sort of conspiracy. Do employees get 'first dibs' on used demo computers from the stores when they upgrade??
